Chapter 12

Audrey

I was relieved to be enjoying a night in after such a jam-packed schedule from the book tour and impending release. Unlike most nights I spent home alone, I decided to take the night off from writing. Everything with Dean had my mind reeling, and I needed some time to unwind.

I resorted to the usual things I did to unwind, a long hot bubble bath with a glass of wine. Then, masks for my face, feet, hair, and hands. Followed by painting my nails and toes, reading a book, pacing the room, trying to read again. Flipping on the small TV tucked away in a dresser in my bedroom. Flipping through a magazine. Playing with Sun and Moon. Pacing the room again.

Actually, those were just all the things I tried to do to no avail. I felt restless and distracted. The harder I worked to occupy myself, the more my phone kept calling out to me. Not my phone in general, but one name in my contacts list specifically.

I was trying really hard to take everything Blair said to heart in hopes that it might change things with Dean and me. But the moment he started trying to lay on the charms and win me back, I got scared. Like palms sweating, heart pounding might have a panic attack scared. Maybe Blair was right. Maybe I did need therapy, even more than she could provide.

But that fact and the disaster the other evening turned into didn't stop me from yearning to call him. It was innocent enough, I told myself. To make our relationship believable, we needed to learn to get along. We certainly needed to avoid screaming at each other in the middle of the street. I had a feeling that would hurt my reputation even more than being single would.

I went through the motions, the spa treatments and books and snacks from the kitchen, and everything else I could think of, but still, nothing worked. As the minutes ticked on later into the evening, I finally gave up and called him. I told him I had important matters regarding the release to discuss, and I was somewhat surprised when he offered to come over right away.

When the knock came to my door twenty minutes later, I scrambled over to the mirror. I straightened my hair and blouse, then laughed at myself. I didn't care what I looked like for Dean. Right? Some habits just never die, I guessed.

I opened the door to reveal him standing there with a brown bottle-shaped bag in hand.

"Thanks for coming," I said, ushering him in.

"Hope you don't mind I brought some wine." He held the bag up in the air.

"Don't forget. Shoes," I told him as he stepped inside.

He rolled his eyes but slipped them off anyway. As he did, Sun and Moon came over to rub on his legs. I liked the way he kneeled down and petted long, soft strokes down their backs. Not everyone liked cats, and I didn't care for those people.
